General background information
The conference discussed the role of the capital markets union (CMU) in supporting a stronger European Union and a green, digital, inclusive and resilient economy.
Completing the CMU is more necessary than ever. In today’s international context, marked by global tensions and in particular the Russian aggression at our borders, making Europe stronger on all fronts, including in the financial sector, is essential. The CMU is also key to support the economy as it recovers from the COVID-19 crisis, help companies raise the funds they need, channel private funds into the much-needed investments in the green and digital transitions, and enable consumers to put their savings to work for their life projects and to invest responsibly.
At a moment when several CMU legislative proposals are on the co-legislators’ table, the high-level conference will also be the opportunity to take stock of what has already been achieved until now and to reflect on what still needs to be done.
Three separate dedicated sessions focused on the role of the CMU in (i) supporting Europe’s position/competitiveness in a global environment, (ii) making the EU an even safer place for individuals to save and invest long-term, (iii) making financing more accessible to European companies. Each session will include a “fireside chat” and a panel discussion with high-level speakers.
The conference took place physically in the Charlemagne Building in Brussels and was also be webstreamed. You can watch the recording of the conference here.
